ZERO - The End of Prostate Cancer is an American nonprofit organization with the mission to end prostate cancer by advancing research, encouraging action, and providing education and support to men and their families.  Its website http://zerocancer.org/ is a useful resource.

ZERO has just published a new booklet “Managing Advanced Prostate Cancer” which may be of interest to members.  You can get the booklet  by clicking on this link.

When reading the booklet, you should remember that it is written for an American audience.  Some of the treatments and clinical trials are not  available in Australia.  For example, the Circulating Tumor Test referred to in the booklet is not a standard test in Australia.

One criticism that we have of the new booklet is that it recommends the use of Selenium and Vitamin E supplements for treatment of prostate cancer. A large clinical trial, the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), showed that there was no evidence of any benefit from the use of Selenium and Vitamin E supplements and there were some signs that these supplements were doing some harm.

Supplements may interfere with medications prescribed by your doctor.  You should discuss any supplements that you are taking, or propose to take, with your doctor.
