Popeye
David: Good luck with this. My answers are as follows: 1) Do currently see a Palliative Care Consultant? .....................................................................................................................No 2) Do you know where your nearest Palliative Care Consultant is located? .............................................................................No, but I suspect they would be at the local hospitals. I went looking for information at one of the local hospitals and was told that they had palliative and hospice care but patients need a referral. 3)Has your GP mentioned Palliative Care to you? ....................................................................................................................No 4) When diagnosed with AMPC or APC did your medical specialist mention seeing a Palliative Care Consultant? ................No, none of the specialists 5) As part of Allied Health Support that you may have been offered was Palliative Care Mentioned? .....................................I have not received any allied health support 6) When do you think you should see a Palliative Care Consultant? ........................................................................................Possibly an initial consultation on diagnosis then again when/if cancer progressess. 7) Prior to joining the APC Forum where you aware of Palliative Care and its purpose? .........................................................Yes. from prior experience with friendss and family and also from web posts. 8) Do you think your community would benefit if there was a Palliative Care Consultant in your district? ................................Yes David, I hope this was of some help????? give a shout if you think of anything else that the group or myself could help with. I see the title of the forum might suggest euthanasia as the subject of the evening. Good luck Lee aka Popeye

JimJimJimJim
David 1-5 No 6 Onset of pain 7 Not fully - just regarded it as terminal care. 8 Yes - definitely. I have seen the difference in pain management between members who have, or do not have, access to comprehensive palliative care. Good luck with your talk. Charles (Chuck) Maack
Palliative Care can have a couple meanings: 1) Moving to medications for hopefully reining in and managing cancer, or 2) that care that comes when end-of-life is imminent. The following papers provide a description of Palliative Care with the first providing information that may help you, and the second a somewhat lengthy report by Dr. James Tulsky, Director of the Program on the Medical Encounter and Palliative Care at the Durham VA Medical Center, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University in the U.S. http://www.getpalliativecare.org/?gclid=CPm1k6azu7YCFQQEnQodOT8Avw http://www.aging.senate.gov/minority/public/index.cfm/files/serve?File_id=41a90a03-acb9-61e1-002a-ddd6592f33e4 When I am working with a caregiver whose spouse/partner is approaching end-of-life, I provide both of the following papers: END OF LIFE CONSIDERATIONS:* http://tinyurl.com/6xlz6mm GRIEVING PROCESS AND PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE:* http://tinyurl.com/3rk9ufn When I am aware that a patient will be referred to a Medical Oncologist for further care because either or both surgical removal of or radiation to the prostate gland has failed and the patient will now be moved to palliative care, I provide the questions in the following to ask the Medical Oncologist: Questions to ask your Medical Oncologist* http://tinyurl.com/bu88de3 I hope the foregoing will provide you enough information for your presentation regarding palliative care. I would think your presentation should include both the recognition that palliative care begins when usual surgical removal of the prostate gland or radiation to the prostate gland has failed and further treatment will now depend on appropriate use of medications to rein in and manage the cancer - and that care necessary when end-of-life is imminent.
