Funding for specialist prostate cancer nurses

Paul Edwards

Recommended Posts

It was good that the Federal Government  announced today that it would provide almost $6 million for specialist prostate cancer nurses.

More Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer than Australian women with breast cancer and more Australian men die from prostate cancer than Australian women die from breast cancer.

Despite these statistics, the Federal Government provided  $20.5 million for specialist breast nurses.

The existing funding for prostate cancer nurses & breast cancer nurses runs out on 30 June 2017.

In November 2016 the Federal Government  announced  that it would continue funding for specialist breast nurses   Specialist prostate cancer nurses have in doubt until today as to whether they would have jobs after 30 June 2017.

We need to tell our politicians to stop this discrimination against men with prostate cancer.

Hi Paul,

Before I go shooting off emails to my local member and shadow health minister, can you clarify the comparison between funding levels.  Are they for the one year or a fixed term such as over 3 years, and are the sums quoted for comparable periods ??  Just don't want to make us look stupid.

Hi Kezza2

Both grants are for a fixed term commencing 1 July 2017.

Breast care nurses get $20.5 million over a period of 4 years.

The specialist prostate cancer nurses get almost $6 million over a period of 3 years.

Prostate cancer patients have to go begging to the Government more often tha breast cancer patients.

Good news!!!

Last night the Government announced futher funding for prostate cancer nurses.  This brings the total number of specialist prostate cancer nurses around Australia to 43.

To a large degree , this removes the wide discrepancy between Federal funding for prostate cancer nurses and Federal funding for breast cancer nurses.
