Another chapter in my cancer story.

After a couple weeks of throbing pain in my groin which feels like I must have a bowel movement, and traces of blood in my urine, my oncologist sent me to the radiation therapy in Traralgon.

Result, I abandon Zytiga while I have radiation to my prostate, which is very enlarged.  A bit of a worry as my liver is also in trouble with lots of tumours.   Pain management will soon be taken over by palliative care folk.  In the meantime I juggle panamax and endone and try not to have too much coloxyl.

Cancer can become a full time job and I really feel sympathy for patients who are young.

Anton, it sounds like you're going through a really rough patch at the moment.  I'm most impressed that in the midst of all your problems you still have time to think of others with cancer and feel sympathy for the young men who get prostate cancer.

I see that you live at Briagolong which is a small country town in Victoria at the foot of the Great Dividing Range.  You don't have access to the same facilities that some-one like me living in a capital city has.  Cancer is a full-time job.  I hope that you and your wife are not doing it all on your own and are getting some external assistance and support.   Have you been in touch with Kelly, the specialist prostate cancer nurse who's based in Traralgon?

Hi Anton,

As a matter of interest, did the radio-oncologist discuss putting you onto Avodart  (or a similar '5-alpha reductase inhibitor' drug) for several weeks to 6 months prior to radiotherapy, in order to shrink your enlarged prostate ? This simplifies the task of providing uniformly high treatment energy to the gland.

Another quite new  idea is the injection of 'hydrogel' between the prostate gland and the rectum prior to radiation in order to open up a space there, which allows high radiation doses while largely avoiding rectal damage from the nearby radiation. (This 'pre-treatment 'is so new that it may not yet be available in Australia).

Cheers,

Alan

Alan - with the extreme pain that Anton has been suffering, delaying radiation for several weeks to 6 months to take Avodart isn't really an option.

Hi Anton,

By all accounts you are going through a rough patch.

I have been under a Palliative Care Consultant now for 4yrs which has been a great asset in helping to improve quality of life. Managing this journey without constant bone pain.                                                                                                                                                                       Now on Fentanyl Patches 75mcg/hr. Patch lasts 3 days comes in packets of 5. Strictly controlled. Can only obtain 10 at a time. Very occasionally have to take a 20mg OxyNorm for brake through pain. I am also fortunate that my PCC is a Physician and he now manages my case along with my GP.                                                                                                                                                                                                                            All the best Anton, my number is on members list if you want a chat.

David
