The PRCI has set up an online community, not unlike our own.

Pro

  • Moderators include medical professionals.
  • With the population of the USA, it should soon attract plenty of information/discussion.
  • The PCRI has a worldwide reputation for disseminating evidence-based information through medical oncologists who specialize in prostate cancer.

Con

  • It is difficult to find the Forums on the PCRI site, even if you are looking for them.
  • It is a little confusing in structure, with a million forums and subforums.
  • Men are required to perform a self-diagnosis to try to discover where to post, or to find information.
  • Information will have USA orientation, and for men who have metastatic disease (like many men on our Community), there will be references to drugs that are not yet available in Australia.

The Community is called PRCI Blue Community. Check it out yourself:

The Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) is a charitable not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of men’s lives by supporting research and disseminating information that educates and empowers patients, families and the medical community.

PCRI was founded in 1996 by internationally recognized prostate cancer oncologists Mark C. Scholz, MD and Stephen B. Strum, MD.

Men who attended the last PCFA conference on the Gold Coast will have heard Mark Scholz speak.

I was very impressed that he made himself available for questions (instead of having lunch!) and answered every last question from every last man.

One of the questions was "Do you provide telephone consultations?" to which he answered "Yes".

His book "Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers", co-authored with a patient Ralph Blum, is excellent reading for the newly diagnosed man.
