I see that abiraterone has been added to the PBS and here are the prescribing restrictions:

  • Castration resistant metastatic carcinoma of the prostate

The Clinical criteria is:

The treatment must be in combination with prednisone or prednisolone,

AND the Clinical criteria is:

  • The treatment must not be used in combination with chemotherapy,

AND the Clinical criteria is:

  • Patient must have failed treatment with docetaxel due to resistance or intolerance,

AND the Clinical criteria is:

  • Patient must have a WHO performance status of 2 or less,

AND the Clinical criteria is:

  • Patient must not receive PBS-subsidised abiraterone if progressive disease develops while on abiraterone.

The WHO performance status simple means that the person is not confined to bed for at least 50% of waking hours.

The dispensed price is $3600.11 for 120 tablets. Dose is 4 tablets daily together on an empty stomach.

Cheers, Euan
